For my modifications, I tested out a lot of techniques I have never tried before. Most are focused on the environment. Because a lot of work was done outside engine and art focused, I've added an image of some of the things I did in one of the screenshots.

  • Created a torch, both base model and VFX (from concept to finish, Photoshop for concept art > Blender for base model, Photoshop texture + Shader Graph + Particle System in Unity for VFX)
  • Created two types of grasses, modeled in Blender, textured in Substance Painter (first time using!), went back to Blender to bake it to a flat plane texture, then used either the singular texture in Unity terrain's "Paint Details" setting or made a foliage model by combining multiple planes. I don't think I understand how normals work in Substance Painter, so that is something to figure out next time. (Referenced tutorials: How I Made Stylized Game-Ready Foliage in Blender by Vertex HorizonsLet's Make Stylized Textures! Substance Painter Tutorial by Stylized Station)
  • Created two new textures for the terrain (+ used one already provided) to change the terrain look completely. Done in Substance Designer. (Referenced tutorial: Stylized Layered Rock Texture | Material maker by Swizzle, note original is for Material Maker but I adapted it to Substance Designer)
  • Changed the lighting, both skybox (made in Photoshop) and in game directional lights.
  • Changed all music, done through Pro Tools (also my first time using). I used a lot of ambient sounds (+ changed the enemy death sound because it bothered me, not a significant change) with audio sources from pixabay.com
  • Changed the UI, mainly the text. Fonts from dafont.com

Overall, moved the character to an entirely new environment and made it easier to form paths (through grass and torches). I'm not a 3D person, so majority of my modifications focused on texturing or VFX.
